Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study

2009-09-04 to 2009-12-07
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): LL Lactide
- Batch no: 0902000694
- Appearance: white flakes, solid

Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
> 4 min
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Results:

The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test substance pile. The test substance melted and burned with a blue flame. After removal of the ignition source, the flame extinguished immediately and no propagation of combustion was observed.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
In conclusion, it can be stated that LL Lactide is considered as 'not highly flammable'.
Executive summary:

A preliminary screening test was performed for the determination of the flammability of LL Lactide (100%). No propagation of combustion of the test substance along 200 mm length of the pile within 4 minutes was observed. According to the guideline, performance of a main study for the determination of the burning rate of the test substance was not required. Based on the results, the test substance is considered as 'not highly flammable'.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
flammable gases
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid
Endpoint:
pyrophoric liquids
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information
