After the equilibration period, each sample was noted to contain excess, undissolved test item at the surface of the solution; whereas, after centrifugation, each sample (supernatant) was noted to be a clear, colorless solution free from excess, undissolved test item.

A platinum ring with a reduced circumference of 4 cm was used, whereas the guidelines specify 6 cm. Once calibrated, the balance and ring assembly used in this test give a direct reading for surface tension that is within the required accuracy (± 0.5 mN/m). This procedure with respect to the reduced ring dimensions has been considered not to have affected the integrity of the test.

As each (corrected) surface tension value was within 0.5 mN/m of the mean (corrected) value, the mean (corrected) value was considered to be acceptable as the endpoint of the test.

According to criteria mentioned in Method A6, substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m under the conditions of this method should be regarded as being surface active.

Conclusions:
The surface tension of a 90 % saturated solution in water has been determined to be 72.9 ± 0.5 mN/m at 21.8 ± 0.5 °C. The test item was considered to be not surface-active.
