Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The test substance was determined to be readily biodegradable, having degraded by 101% under test conditions, by the end of a 28-day test.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

A ready biodegradability test (OECD test 301F, Manometric Respirometry Test) was perfomed by Huntingdon Life Sciences, UK, to determine the biodegradability characteristics of the test substance. The study was conducted according to OECD and EC test guidelines, and was performed in accordance with GLP.

The results obtained for the degradation of sodium benzoate (reference substance) and for the cumulative oxygen consumption of the control mixtures fulfilled the validity criteria for the test. The test substance was also found not to be inhibitory to the microbial inoculum.

Mean oxygen consumption in mixtures containing the test substance was equivalent to 10% of the theoretical value after approximately 2 days, 60% after approximately 6 days and 101% at the end of the test on Day 28. A degradation plateau was observed on Day 18. On this basis, the test substance was considered to be readily biodegradable under the conditions of the test.
