OTHER TEST CONDITIONS
- Photoperiod: Continuous light
- Light intensity and quality: Fluorescent lamp - 8000 lux

EFFECT PARAMETERS MEASURED (with observation intervals if applicable) :
- Determination of cell concentrations: The cells were observed at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours using a Burker chamber.

TEST CONCENTRATIONS
- Range finding study
- Test concentrations: Ten-fold dilutions from 100 mg/L to 0.01 mg/L
- Results used to determine the conditions for the definitive study: Yes
Reference substance (positive control):
no
Key result
Duration:
72 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
> 100 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
growth rate
Details on results:
A normal and healthy appearance of the algae at the end of the test was microscopically observed for the control and treated group.

The sample is considered stable because the measured concentrations of the test item at the end of the test have been maintained within ± 20% at the beginning of the test (see Table 1).

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Remarks:
The cell concentration in the control cultures increased with a specific growth rate of 1.61% (average), the CVss was <35% and the CVwp was <7%
Conclusions:
According to the results of the test, the EC50 (72 hours) for algae is estimated to be >100 mg/L based on nominal concentrations of the test item “Balsalazide acid”.

Description of key information

A GLP study was performed in accordance with OECD Guideline 201 to assess the toxicity of the test material, Balsalazide acid, to algae. According to the results of the test, the EC50 (72 h) was > 100 mg/L (nominal).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
