Details on results:
Behavioural observations: At the 2 lowest concentrations (3.5 and 6.4 mg/l) swimming was affected at 72 hours, in addition to this, doses of 10.3 mg/l at 48 hours and 19.9 at 24 hours also affected swimming behaviour. At 10.3 mg/l at 48 hours and 19.9 mg/l at 24 hours, there was loss of equilibrium. Respiratory function and pigmentation were observed at 19.9 mg/l at 24 hours.

All fish exposed at 38.8 mg/l were dead at the 24 hour observation time.

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of this study, the 96 hour LC50 of the read-across substance linalool is 27.8 mg/l.
Executive summary:

In a 96-h acute toxicity study, {Rainbow Trout,Oncorrhynchus mykiss} were exposed to linalool at measured concentrations of 3.5, 6.4, 10.3, 19.9 and 38.8 mg/l.  The 96-h LC50was 27.8 mg/l. Sublethal effects were observed at the 2 lowest concentrations (3.5 and 6.4 mg/l): swimming was affected at 72 hours. In addition to this, exposure to 10.3 mg/l at 48 hours and 19.9 at 24 hours also affected swimming. At 10.3 mg/l at 48 hours and 19.9 mg/l at 24 hours, there was loss of equilibrium. Respiratory function and pigmentation were observed at 19.9 mg/l at 24 hours.

All fish exposed at 38.8 mg/l died within 24 hours.

Description of key information

No reliable experimental data for the test item acute toxicity to fish are available. However acute toxicity to fish of the close chemical analogue linalool has been investigated: the results of this study are considered suitable for use in the assessment of the test item acute toxicity to fish.

Additional information

Linalool is a close chemical analogue of the test item, with similar physico-chemical properties. Results of its testing for acute toxicity to fish are therefore deemed suitable to assess the acute toxicity of the test item to fish. The linalool acute toxicity test using rainbow trout gave a 96 hour LC50 value of 27.8 mg/l: it is reasonable to assume that the test item would produce a similar response in freshwater fish.
