Description of key information
Lanthanum chloride is not irritating to the skin, but at the same time causes serious eye damage.

The skin irritation was investigated according to the Guidelines of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (1973) and Title 49-Transportation Section 173.240 (Calkins 1978). An aqueous paste of Lanthanum chloride, unhydrous was applied to the intact skin under occlusive conditions for 4 h. No signs of erythema and edema were observed during an observation period of 72 h, so Lanthanum trichloride, anhydrous was not irritating to the skin.
The eye irritation was investigated according to OECD 405 under GLP-conditions (Manciaux 2000). 0.1 mL of a Lanthanum chloride solution with a concentration of 24% was instilled in the eyes of rabbits and without removal, the eyes were examined up to 21 days after instillation. Very slight to moderate conjunctival reactions were observed in all animals from day 1: a very slight to moderate chemosis (grade 1 to 3) and a very slight to moderate redness of the conjunctiva (grades 1 to 3). The reactions persisted up to the end of the observation period (day 21). A slight iritis (grade 1) was noted in all animals on day 2, it persisted up to day 5 or 8. A very slight or slight corneal opacity (grades 1 to 2) was recorded in all animals from day 2. It persisted up to the end of the observation period (day 21) in two animals. Mean scores calculated for each animal over 24, 48 and 72 h were: 3.0, 3.0 and 2.0 for chemosis; 3.0, 2.0 and 2.0 for redness of the conjunctiva; 1.0, 1.0 and 1.0 for iris lesions and 1.0, 2.0 and 2.0 for corneal opacity. The effects were not fully reversible during the observation period of 21 days.
