Description of key information

In a 14-days toxicity study with sulfur dust to earthworms the LC50 and the Lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) were determined to be greater than 1000 mg sulfur dust/kg soil dw. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was determined to be 1000 mg test item/kg soil dw, i.e. the highest concentration tested.

In a study performed according to OECD guideline 207 (and GLP compliant) earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were exposed to sulfur dust (Institute für Biologische Analytik und Consulting IBACON GmbH, 2005d). Exposure was for 14 days in treated artificial soil. Treatments were: control, 198, 296, 444, 667 and 1000 mg/kg soil dw. The LC50 was determined to be greater than 1000 mg/kg soil dw. After 14 days exposure, no mortality was observed in any treatment group. The body weight changes of the earthworms were not significantly different compared to the control up to and including the highest test concentration of 1000 mg test item/kg soil. No behavioural effects were observed.
