Description of key information

2,4,6-Trimethyl-2,4,6-tris(3,3,3 -trifluoropropyl)cyclotrisiloxane (F-D3) is susceptible to hydrolysis, with a hydrolysis half-life of greater than 48 hours forming 3,3,3-trifluoropropylmethysilanediol as silanol hydrolysis product.

Therefore, the environmental risk assessment (qualitative only) is based on the properties of the parent substance in accordance with REACH guidance for Chemical Safety Assessment.

The half-lives reported are for the hydrolysis (ring-opening) of the parent substance. The initial product of hydrolysis of F-D3 is 1,5-dihydroxy-1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-tris(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)trisiloxane (the trimerdiol), which is formed by ring-opening of the parent substance; the half-life for this reaction is 6 days at pH 7 and 25°C. This intermediate hydrolysis product then undergoes further hydrolysis reactions with the final hydrolysis product being 3,3,3-trifluoropropylmethysilanediol. The half-lives reported in Section 5.1.2 are for ring-opening of the parent substance.

3,3,3–Trifluoropropylmethysilanediol is the final product of hydrolysis reactions under the normal range of conditions of pH and temperature. However, other biotic or abiotic reactions may proceed over longer time-scales in the environment.
