Potential nitrification activity (PNA) was determined according to 'Soil Biological Variables in Environmental Hazar Assassment' SEPA, Solna, pp40-47, with minor modifications.
Dehydrogenase activity (DHA) was measured by the 2-(p-iodophenyl)-3-(p-nitrophenyl)-5- phenyl tetrazolium (INT) assay [24,27].
N2 fixation activity (NFA) - The acetylene reduction assay was used to estimate the heterotrophic NFA in soil [28,29].

The spiked TNT exerted significant toxic effects on soil microorganisms, as measured by DHA, PNA, and NFA. All these activities decreased as the TNT concentration increased.
