Description of key information

As suggested by physicochemical properties and confirmed by toxicity or toxicokinetics studies performed with the diethylene glycol monoalkyl and dialkyl ether category members, DEGDEE is readily absorbed via all routes of exposure and is distributed in most biological tissues. The metabolism of DEGDEE is expected to be very similar to DEGDME’s since they both have alcohol groups etherified with alkyl groups (methyl or ethyl). DEGDEE is metabolised by cleavage of the ether bonds by monooxygenase to form an alkoxyethoxyethanol  or to a lesser extent an alkoxyethanol ( which are then oxidised by the alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenase into alkoxyethoxyacetic acids (EEAA) and alkoxyacetic acids (EAA) (ECETOC TR 95, 2005).   Diethylene glycol dialkyl ethers metabolism appears to be increased by repeated administration due to liver enzyme induction (ECETOC TR95, 2005). Excretion of DEGDEE and its metabolites is primarily in the urine via the kidneys.
