Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Hydrolysis (as a function of pH) testing is waived, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No.1907/2006, Annex VIII, Column 2.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

According to Regulation (EC) No.1907/2006, Annex VIII, Column 2, hydrolysis (as a function of pH) testing need not be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. The substance has been shown to be readily biodegradable, although the substance was not shown to pass the 10-day window. Therefore, hydrolysis testing is not indicated.

The supporting study report (Elek, 2015) was a preliminary study regarding the stability of a read-across substance (5-Isobenzofurancarboxylic acid, 1,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-, reaction products with 1,2-propanediol; also known as ZAN 573) in water under acidic and neutral conditions. The mass spectra of samples taken at multiple time intervals from both the neutral and acidic solutions showed the disappearance of the substance and the appearance of the water addition products over time. The time dependencies exhibited second order curves; the reaction rate decreased over time under both conditions. This study was semi-quantitative, and cannot provide precise kinetic measurements. However, the signal intensity of the ion associated with the test substance decreased by about one-half in approximately 20 minutes and 15 minutes under neutral and acidic conditions, respectively.  This supporting study indicates that the substance (5-Isobenzofurancarboxylic acid, 1,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-, oligomeric reaction products with 1,2-ethanediol) would also undergo rapid hydrolysis, and therefore, hydrolysis is likely to be an initial first step in the rapid biodegradation of the substance.
