Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Not considered to be a direct inhalation hazard, but if the
vapour is inhaled, move to area of fresh air and give
artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. If there
are signs of discomfort, seek medical advice. Show copy of
SDS or label to medical staff.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes. Seek medical atention and treat as for acid
contamination. Show copy of label or SDS to the medical
staff.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with water and mild soap or detergent. If signs of
discomfort, seek medical attention. Treat as for acid
burns. Remove contaminated clothing and wash thoroughly
before re-use.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. If ingestion has occurred within
the previous 5 minutes, administer small amounts of milk or
water (approx 160 ml, but less than 240 ml). If ingestion
was more than 15 minues before, do not give liquids as this
may induce vomiting which may cause worsening of the
patients condition.

If signs of discomfort, seek medical advice. Show copy of
SDS or label to medical staff.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Dry foam, powder, water spray, carbon dioxide and other
extinguishing agents. No adverse reaction with normal
extinguishing agents is known, although pyrolysis
by-products following use of water may include hydrobromic
acid. Evaluate the nature of the incident before using
water.

Product arising from burning: Complete combustion will lead to the formation of carbon
dioxide, hydrogen bromide and water. Incomplete combustion
(eg in enclosed spaces) will result in volatile organic
derivatives and carbon monoxide. If water is present,
hydrogen bromide may dissolve to form hydrobromic acid.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Full protective equipment is recommended including breathing
apparatus, suitable gloves, goggles and face protection.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Absorb liquid onto sand, sawdust or other absorbant
materials, collect and place into suitably labelled
containers and dispose of as hazardous waste in accordance
with local regulations. Residues and minor spills may be
washed away with water to process drainage system if
permitted under local regulations. This should only be
performed in well ventilated places as hydrogen bromide may
be formed.

Protective clothing should be worn including suitable
gloves, eye/face protection and coveralls. Breathing
apparatus should be used if handling in enclosed spaces or
if the material is in contact with water.

Handling and storage

Handling: PPE applicable to a corrosive organic liquid is required,
such as rubber gloves, eye/face protection and coveralls. In
an enclosed area, self contained breathing aparatus should
also be used.

Although the substance has a measurable vapour pressure,
there is not considered to be a significant risk of
inhalation when used in an adequately ventilated area.

Storage: Store in polyethylene lined steel drums. Ensure the
containers are suitably labelled.

The substance is considered to be poorly stable under
ambient conditions with a storage life of three months. To
maximise stability, store at < -20°C under nitrogen in the
dark.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: BMS 182940-01 is packed in UN approved polyethylene lined
steel drums, containing up to 200 kg.

Stability and reactivity

Danger other than fire: Avoid contact with strong oxidising and reducing agents.
Degradation following contamination with water or damp air
will release hydrogen bromide or hydrobromic acid which may
build up in enclosed places.

Chemical reaction with water: The substance quickly hydrolyses, resulting in the formation
of hydrogen bromide, isobutyraldehyde and propionic acid.

Dust explosion: Not applicable

Dust explosion determined by test: N

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance is consumed during use and there is no
opportunity for recovery or recycling.

Waste solvent from production is sent for recycling

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Hydrolysing the substance will destroy it. No known method
to reduce the hazardous nature of the substance.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Trace quantities are destroyed by biological oxidation in
waste water treatment plants.

Code 641

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: This is recommended for large quantities and solvent wastes.
Closed system incinerators with scrubbers should be used in
compliance with local and national legislation.

Code A663

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Trace quantities in water can be treated in secondary
biological WWTP before discharge to municipal treatment
works.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - other: No other recommended methods of disposal.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not available to the general public.
