Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- Endpoint:
- activated sludge respiration inhibition testing
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 3 hours
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test
- GLP compliance:
- yes
- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Hop extract - CO2 extract of Humulus lupulus variety 'Cascade'. Batch number 160025. Principal components: alpha acids: 35.06% w/w; beta acids: 38.47% w/w; essential oils: 8.92% v/w
- Test organisms (species):
- activated sludge
- Key result
- Duration:
- 3 h
- Dose descriptor:
- NOEC
- Effect conc.:
- ca. 100 mg/L
- Conc. based on:
- act. ingr.
- Validity criteria fulfilled:
- yes
- Conclusions:
- Study Conclusion: "The study was conducted according to the test guideline. HOP EXTRACT exhibited some respiration inhibition at 1000mg/l. The definitive test was not required by the sponsor and was, therefore, not performed. HOP EXTRACT also demonstrated no abiotic response.
The 3-hour EC50 of HOP EXTRACT to activated sludge respiration inhibition was determined to be >1000mg/l (using linear interpolation) during the preliminary study.
The NOEC for HOP EXTRACT was determined to be 100mg/l using direct observation."
NB: hop extract (test material) contains alpha acids, beta acids and hop essential oil. Hop, Humulus lupulus, etx., isomerized, potassium salt contains the iso-alpha acids. Iso-alpha acids and alpha acids have similar antibacterial activities - see Simpson WJ (1993) Cambridge Prize Lecture. Studies on the sensitivity of lactic acid bateria to hop bitter acids. Journal of the Institute of Brewing 99: 405-411 (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/j.2050-0416.1993.tb01180.x/epdf)
Consequently, the results for hop extract are relevant for Hop, Humulus lupulus, etx., isomerized, potassium salt. A further study for iso-alpha acids has been planned and will be entered as an update. - Endpoint:

- Conclusions:
- The study was conducted according to the test guideline. Potassium salt of Iso-alpha acids
exhibited no significant respiration inhibition at any test concentration. The definitive test was not
required by the sponsor and was, therefore, not performed. Potassium salt of Iso-alpha acids also
demonstrated no abiotic response.
The 3-hour EC50 of Potassium salt of Iso-alpha acids to activated sludge respiration inhibition was
determined to be >1000mg/l (using Linear interpolation) during the preliminary study.
The NOEC for Potassium salt of Iso-alpha acids was determined to be 1000mg/l using direct
observation.
