Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
oxidising solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 22 September 2014 to 09 December 2014
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test O.1 (Test for oxidizing solids)
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
Particle size of the KBrO3 < than 150 µm instead of > than 150 µm. This deviation was not considered to have affected the quality or the interpretation of the results.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Contact with:
powdered cellulose
Sample tested:
reference: 3:7 mixture potassium bromate + cellulose
Parameter:
mean burning time
Result:
122 s
Remarks on result:
other: The value of reaction time was slightly higher than mentioned in the UN O.1 guideline (100 s). Such difference can be due to the particle size of potassium bromate (the granulometry of potassium bromate is known to influence the time of reaction).
Sample tested:
reference: 2:3 mixture potassium bromate + cellulose
Parameter:
mean burning time
Result:
68 s
Remarks on result:
other: The value of reaction time was slightly higher than mentioned in the UN O.1 guideline (54 s). Such difference can be due to the particle size of potassium bromate (the granulometry of potassium bromate is known to influence the time of reaction).
Sample tested:
reference: 3:2 mixture potassium bromate + cellulose
Parameter:
mean burning time
Result:
5 s
Remarks on result:
other: This value of reaction time was comparable to that mentioned in the UN O.1 guideline (4 s).
Key result
Sample tested:
4:1 sample-to-cellulose ratio
Parameter:
mean burning time
Result:
248 s
Key result
Sample tested:
1:1 sample-to-cellulose ratio
Parameter:
mean burning time
Result:
254 s

The mean times of reaction of test item and cellulose mixtures in ratios 4:1 and 1:1 were superior to the mean times of reaction measured during this study for the potassium bromate and cellulose mixtures in ratios 3:7, 2:3 and 3:2. They are also higher that the standard mean times of reaction reported in the UN guideline for the mixture potassium bromate/cellulose. Therefore, the test can be considered as negative, and the substance is not an oxidising solid.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
Gadolinium trinitrate is not an oxidising agent (no classification in category 5.1 of ADR).
Executive summary:

The oxidising properties of gadolinium trinitrate were investigated according to the UN O.1 test method in compliance with GLP. The test item was not classified as an oxidising agent.

Description of key information

Gadolinium trinitrate does not show any oxidising properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
non oxidising

Additional information

An experimental study of reliability 1 according to Klimisch, performed in compliance with GLP and according to UN test method O.1, was selected as a key study. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that gadolinium trinitrate does not need to be classified for oxidising properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Gadolinium trinitrate was demonstrated not to have oxidising properties and does not need to be classified for this endpoint according to CLP criteria.
