Description of key information

In a 72 h toxicity test with Algae, the ErC50 of TCD Alcohol was determined to be > 100 mg/L (highest concentration tested). The NOEC was 100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L

Additional information

For the assessment of the toxicity of TCD Alcohol DM to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria, one test is available. This study (Bouwman/NOTOX, 2010b) was performed according to OECD test guideline 202 under GLP conditions resulting in high reliability and is used as key study.

In a 72 hour toxicity study, cultures of green algae (Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata, strain NIVA CHL 1) were exposed to TCD Alcohol DM under static conditions according to OECD Test guideline 201. Concentrations were 0, 0.1, 1.0, 10, and 100 mg/L of test chemical (water soluble fraction 100 mg/L and 0.1, 1.0, and 10% dilutions thereof, analytical value for water soluble fraction 102 - 108 mg/L). Cell density was determined by spectrophotometric measurement at 720 nm.

For none of the concentrations tested, an effect of TCD Alchol DM on the growth of algae could be observed. In addition, no compound related abnormalities/phytotoxic effects were noted.

The ErC50 based on cell density was determined to be > 100 mg/L.

The NOEC was 100 mg/L (Bouwman/NOTOX 2010b).
