Appearance:

1,6-dichlorohexane is a colourless and odourless liquid at at 20 °C and 1013 hPa.

Melting point:

The melting point of 1,6-dichlorohexane was determined to be -14.8°C at 1013 hPa.

Boiling point:

The boiling point of 1,6-dichlorohexane was determined to be in a range from 203-205°C at 1013 hPa.

Density:

The relative density of 1,6-dichlorohexane was determined to be 1.0690 at 20°C using water at 4°C as reference.

Particle size distribution:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the study does not need to be conducted as the substance is marketed or used in a non solid or granular form. In addition the test on particle size distribution can not be conducted as the substance is a liquid at 20 °C and 1013 hPa.

Vapour pressure:

The vapour pressure of 1,6-dichlorohexane was calculated to be 17.38 Pa at 25°C.

Partition coefficient:

The partition coefficient of 1,6-dichlorohexane was calculated to be log Pow 3.56 at pH 7 and 20°C.

Water Solubility:

The water solubility of 1,6-dichlorohexane was determined to to be 57.0 mg/L (pH 6.01) at 20 ± 0.5 °C. Thus the test item regarded as slightly soluble.

Surface tension:

The surface tension of 1,6-dichlorohexane was determined to be 35.98 mN/m at 20°C.

Flash point:

The flash point of 1,6-dichlorohexane was determined to be 74°C.

Auto flammability:

The auto-ignition temperature of 1,6-dichlorohexane was determined to be 205°C.

Flammability:

The test on the flammability according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.10 was not performed as the test item is a liquid. For liquids the primary value for ease of ignition is the flash point conducted using Method A9 ‘Flash Point Method’ of Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008. The result of the Flash Point test is used to allocate a liquid substance into the appropriate flammability class.

Explosiveness:

In accordance with column 2 adaptation statement of Annex VII Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the determination of the oxidizing properties (required in section 7.11) was waived based on a structural assessment of the substance. 1,6 dichlorohexane does not contain any functional groups quoted in ‘Manual of Tests and Criteria’ (fourth revised edition, appendix 6, table A 6.1) or Bretherick’s – Handbook (6th Edition, Volume 2, p 128 ff) which may indicate explosive properties. Therefore, it can be concluded by expert judgement that this substance is not explosive.

Oxidizing properties:

In accordance with column 2 Annex VII section 7.13 Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the test on oxidising properties was waived as the chemical structure of the test item does not indicate any functional groups associated to oxidizing properties. Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.17 was replaced by a theory based evaluation. The material in addition does not contain any functional groups quoted in 'Manual of Tests and Criteria' (fourth revised edition, appendix 6, chapter 6) which may indicate oxidizing properties. 1,6 -dichlorohexane was thus considered not oxidising. No experimental determination was carried out.

Stability in organic solvents:

According to the Annex IX Standard Information Requirements of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), the assessment of the stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products is “only required if stability of the substance is considered to be critical”. According to Section R.7.1.6 of the Endpoint Specific Guidance (2008), “There are rare occasions when it is important to have information on the stability of a compound in an organic solvent, to ensure confidence in the test results. However, for many substances, the stability in organic solvents will not be critical and testing need not be conducted”. Thus, the determination of the stability in organic solvents (required in section 7.15) was waived for the test substance the stability in organic solvents is not an essential property and in addition the experience in handling and use shows the test item is stable in organic solvents.

Dissociation constant:

In accordance with guidance IR/CSA Chapter R.7A Endpoint Specific Guidance, specifically R.7.1.17.1 Information Requirements on Dissociation Constant, if the substance cannot dissociate due to a lack of relevant functional groups, the dissociation constant is irrelevant. 1,6-dichlorohexane does not contain functional groups subject to dissociation, consequently a study is not justified and was waived.

Viscosity:

The kinematic viscosity of 1,6 -Dichlorohexane was determiend to be 2.02 mm2s-1 at 20°C.
