Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The influence of the test item 3-mercaptopropionic acid on aquatic organisms representing three different trophic levels was investigated in three acute studies in accordance with OECD guidelines and GLP principles. The acute toxicity determined was as follows: Brachydanio rerio 96 h-LC50 = 270 mg/L, Daphnia magna 48 h-EC50 = 17 mg/L, and Selenastrum capricornutum 72 h-ErC50 = 32.6 mg/L. In conclusion, the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna was the most sensitive organism tested with a 48 h-EC50 of 17 mg/L.

Furthermore, inhibitory effects on the respiration of activated sludge were also tested in an OECD guideline study under GLP. The study resulted in a 3 h-EC50 of 393.3 mg/L. The 3 h-EC10 was determined to be 32.1 mg/L.

Conclusion on classification

Potential threats of 3-mercaptopropionic acid to the aquatic environment were determined in different ecotoxicological studies using different test species. All studies are conclusive and the results do not lead to a classification.
