Description of key information

An OECD 222 compliant long term toxicity study with Eisenia fetida was conducted, applying nominal concentrations of 62.5, 125, 250, 500, and 1000 mg test item/kg dry weight. Regarding reproduction an EC10 of 74.4 mg/kg dry weight was determined.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Long-term EC10, LC10 or NOEC for soil macroorganisms:
74.4 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

Earth worm study:

In a 56 day study adult earth worms of the species Eisenia fetida were exposed to the test item at nominal concentrations of 0 mg (control), 0 mg solvent control, 62.5 mg, 125 mg, 250 mg, 500 mg and 1000 mg/kg dry weight in accordance with the OECD 222 guideline. The mortality and the body weight change of the adult worms was observed and recorded on day 28. Reproduction and mean number of juveniles per test vessel 56 days after application was observed.

Test results:

Mortality adult worms:

NOEC = 250 mg test substance/kg soil (dw)
LOEC = 500 mg test substance /kg soil (dw).

ECX values mortality of the adult worms [mg/kg soil (dw)]

EC10: 360 mg test substance/kg soil (dw)

EC50: 535 mg test substance/kg soil (dw)

Biomass change adult earth worms:

NOEC < 62.5 mg test substance/kg soil (dw)
LOEC = 62.5 mg test substance /kg soil (dw).

Reproduction by counting of the juvenile worms:

NOEC = 62.5 mg test substance/kg soil (dw)
LOEC = 125 mg test substance/kg soil (dw))

ECx values [mg/kg soil (dw)]

EC10: 74.4 mg test substance/kg soil (dw)

EC50: 154 mg test substance/kg soil (dw)

The results in this study are consistent with all validity criteria and the test is valid according to the test guideline of this study. No deviations from the test guidelines or other incidents occurred during the course of the reported test, which may have influenced the results.
