Executive summary:

The determination of the flammability of Phytosphingosine was performed in accordance with EEC-Directive 92/69 EEC, A.10 "Flammability (solids)" (1992).

Phytosphingosine was formed in a wedge-shaped pile with a length of 25 cm, a width of 2 cm and 1 cm in height. An attempt was made to ignite the test substance with the flame of a gas-burner. The test

substance could not be ignited with a flame, although it emitted yellow sparks and melted in contact with the ignition source. After removal of the ignition source, no more sparks were observed. The molten test substance turned brown. In conclusion, Phytosphingosine is not "highly flammable" according to the criteria of the directive.

The submission substance does not need to be classified as flammable solid, because the submission substance does meet the classification criteria set out in the CLP Regulation; i.e. Phytosphingosine does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period.
