Reference
Endpoint:
boiling point
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
July 14, 2008 - November 25, 2008
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.2 (Boiling Temperature)
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
test parameters and conditions: apparatus, size of sample glass tubes, observation of the capillary
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 103 (Boiling Point)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EPA OPPTS 830.7220 (Boiling Point / Boiling Range)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
For the determination of the boiling point, the capillary method was used. A small amount of the test item was heated in the electronic controlled sample block and the temperature of the sample was displayed. The sample was observed visually while raising the temperature. A phase transformation from liquid to vapour usually is deduced by the formation of stream bubbles leaving the inserted boiling capillary.
The test item was assessed visually for any possible changes in its appearance, consistency and colour. The initial temperature of boiling or other effects was registered with the corresponding heating temperature.
The standard boiling point is defined as the temperature at which the vapour pressure af a liquid is the same as the standard pressure (101.325 kPa)
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:
method according to Siwoloboff
Remarks:
capillary method
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Batch No. 512051
CoA: Dr. Straetmans Chemische Produkte GmbH, June 16, 2008
Colourless liquid
expiry date: December 2008
Key result
Boiling pt.:
342 °C
Atm. press.:
1 atm

Upon approach of the boiling temperature, bubbles were emerged rapidly from the bottom of the capillary. The boiling temperature is that temperature at which, on momentary cooling, the formation of bubbles stops and the liquid suddenly rises in the capillary.

Conclusions:
The boiling point of the test item was determined to be 342 °C.
Executive summary:

The determination of the boiling point was performed by visual judgement using the capillary method following test guidelines (EU method A.2, OECD 103 and EPA OPPTS 830.7220).

The boiling point of Dermosoft DGMC, reaction mass of 3-(2,3-dihydroxypropoxy)-2-hydroxypropyl decanoate and 1-(2,3-dihydroxypropoxy)-3-hydroxypropan-2-yl decanoate was determined to be 342 °C. The colour of the test item changed from colourless to yellow.
