Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

The toxicity of the substance has been measured experimentally with freshwater algae. Due to the extremely low water solubility all studies have been conducted using Water Accommodated Fractions and completed as limit tests.

Effects on algae / cyanobacteria

The EC50 in freshwater algae is considered to be >1000mg/l. Three of the studies available support this conclusion, with one study suggesting the EC50 could exceed 1500mg/l. Due to the algistatic observations at the high dose level with this study, however, it is considered that this conclusion may not be wholly reliable and the more consistent conclusion is considered to be more appropriate. The top dose considered by the two remaining studies did not exceed 100 mg/l, although the data support the conclusion that the EC50 is above this dose level. As this dose level has been included in the other studies conducted, it is considered acceptable to consider this as supporting data but to conclude that the highest dose level attained from studies considered reliable is both appropriate and adequately supported by the data.

The substance is, therefore, considered not toxic to algae. Nevertheless, adequate controls will be in place during production and use to ensure that the substance is not released to the environment.

The toxicity of the substance has not been assessed using marine species, but it is considered likely to be similar to freshwater species.
