Additional information

Animal data on skin and eye irritation is not available.

Human data without dose-response information revealed severe skin burns after skin contact with liquid phosgene (Hygienic Guide Series, 1968) as well as corneal opacifications leading ultimately to perforation and formation of symblepharon (D'Osvaldo, 1928). Since phosgene is rapidly hydrolyzed in aqueous environment to form carbon dioxide and hydrochloric acid, the corrosive effects on skin and eyes may be explained by the decomposition product hydrochloric acid.
