Description of key information
HMD was experimentally tested for flammable properties of solids and liquids, as it can be found under both forms during life-cycle. Results were negative according to EC classification criteria. Flammability if contact with air or water is waived, as not justified (chemical structure, experience).

HMD is intended to be handled and used always in liquid form at around 80°C. Therefore, the flash point measurement was judged appropriate. Nevertheless, the substance can occasionally be transported or stored at ambient temperature, i.e. as a mass crystallised solid, so testing according to the guidelines for solids was also performed.
Moreover, the chemical structure does not fall into critical categories for pyrophoric properties or flammability in contact with water, and hexamethylenediamine has historically been available as aqueous solutions, and/or handled in open air.
Some supporting studies are provided for information, but they are not conclusive or relevant for classification purpose, in particular the global flammable/explosive range of 0.7 -7.6% in air, that applies to the gas state of a substance.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on the absence of propagation of combustion, HexaMethylene Diamine under its solid form is not classified as highly flammable according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) criteria, and is not classified as a flammable solid according to Regulation (EC) N°1272/2008 (CLP).
Based on the measured flash point value of 85°C, HexaMethylene Diamine is not classified as flammable (liquid) according to EU criteria (Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation N°1272/2008).
Nevertheless, it enters in Category 4 of UN GHS.
