Description of key information

The key study examined the biodegradability of LAS. A concentration of 34.3 mg/L LAS was added to flasks containing activated sludge and the amount of CO2 evolved was measured over the next 29 days by TIC analysis. The initial bacterial count was determined to be 81 x 104 colony forming units/mL using the Koch pour-plate method. The reference substance was 89% degraded in 29 days, signifying a valid test. LAS was found to be 85% degraded in 29 days, and therefore, LAS is readily biodegradable. Although not a requirement for surfactants, LAS passed the 10-day window.
