Description of key information

In older studies with experimental animals it was shown that alpha-methylstyrene may cause slight skin and eye irritation.
For experimental animals there are no data available concerning respiratory irritation. In a limited study Wolf et al. (1956) reported strong eye and nasal irritation in human volunteers exposed to concentrations of >= 600 ppm (see section 7.10.3).

In a limited study Wolf et al. (1956) reported strong eye and nasal irritation in human volunteers exposed to concentrations of >= 600 ppm. At < 10 ppm odour was not detectable, at 50 ppm was odour was detectable without mucous membrane irritation, 100 ppm were judged as strong tolerable odour and 200 ppm as strong objectionable odour, and >= 600 ppm was judges as very strong odour with strong eye and nasal irritation (see section 7.10.3). These effects occur at concentrations higher than the STEL and the OEL.

Based on the avialable data classifcation as eye and respiratory irritatant (Eye Irrit. 2 & STOT SE 3) is warranted according to EU regulation 1272/2008.
