Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Physical state: Calcium diformate is a solid, odourless white crystalline powder (20 °C, 1013 hPa; Perstorp, 2010)

Melting point: >300°C (> 573 K) (Perstorp, 2010)

Boiling point: not experimentally determined (> 300 °C)as substance decomposes prior to boiling

Density: relative density (d20/4): 2.00 (Perstorp, 2010)

Particle size distribution: The particle size ditribution of calcium diformate was determined by laser diffraction (Perstorp, 2010):<10 µm (0.85 vol.-%),<50 µm (5.4 vol.-%),<100 µm (17.4 vol.-%)

Vapour pressure: not experimentally determined as the melting point is >300 °C, so a vapour pressure of 0.00022 Pa at 25 °C was calculated using the modified Grain method as implemented in the EPISuite MPBPWIN v1.43 model (Perstorp, 2010).

Partition coefficient: log Kow <-2.3 at pH 7/ 23 °C (EU method A.8; BASF, 2002)

Water solubility: The solubility in water is 172 g/L at 20 °C (OECD 105; Perstorp, 2010).

Surface tension: Surface tension: 72 mN/m at 20 °C (pendant drop; Perstorp, 2010)

Flash point: In accordance with the REACH Guidance R.7.1.9.1 (endpoint specific guidance for flash point), the flash point does not need to be deterrmined for substances that are solids or gases at room temperature. Calcium diformate is a solid at 20 °C (Perstorp, 2010).

Auto flammability: 292 °C (Perstorp, 2010).

Flammability: Not flammable (Perstorp, 2010).

Explosiveness: Not explosive; examination of the structure indicates that there are no groups associated with explosive properties.

Oxidising properties: Not oxidising; due to the structural composition of the substance it is not considered to be oxidising.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products: In accordance with column 1 of Annex IX, the study does not need to be conducted if the stability of the substance is considered to be critical. Formate is not considered as critical.

Dissociation constant: pKa = 3.79 at 20 °C (OECD 112; Perstorp, 2010)

Viscosity: According to “Endpoint specific guidance R.7.1.18.4” viscosity determination is not required for solids.
