Short term tests with species of 3 trophic levels are available for Betaines, C12-14 (even numbered)-alkyldimethyl. Algae turned out to be the most sensitive species revealing an EC50 (72h) of 1.7 mg/L and a NOEC of 0.38 mg/L. Short term effects of the substance towards fish and Daphnia were found in the same range providing a LC50 (96h) of 4.4 mg/L and an EC50 (48h) of 5.3 mg/L, respectively. A long term study for Daphnia magna revealed a NOEC of 10 mg/L for the tested substance with 29.9 % active ingredient and a NOEC of 2.99 mg/L for 100 % active ingredient.

According to the results obtained in guideline studies, the betaines can be regarded as readily biodegradable under aerobic conditions. Thus, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated, as the substance Betaines, C12-14 (even numbered)-alkyldimethyl is readily biodegradable and shows no toxicity to microorganisms (NOEC > 90 mg/L for the tested substance with 30% active ingredient and a NOEC > 27 mg/L for 100% active ingredient ).
