Description of key information
Testing of diethyl ether regarding toxicity to terrestrial arthropods is scientifically unjustified due to lack of exposure based on high volatility, low log POW and consequently low sorption to soil. This is confirmed by the outcome of the CSR.

Developmental damage observed in the third instar of Habrobracon hebetor larvae following exposure to an unreported amount of DEE (Abbott and Grosch, 1984). No guidelines were followed for this toxicity test, and the study was therefore rated ‘4’ according to Klimisch standards. Cocoon-spinning behaviour and silk production were affected, as well as developmental delay. A linear relationship between exposure period and survival to adulthood was observed. Diethyl ether exposure resulted in microcephaly, microophthalmia, anophthalmia, and missing mouth-parts as well as failure of anterior body segments and appendages to develop.
However, it is assumed that concentration used in this study were well beyond realistic environmental concentration and therefore findings do not represent real concern.
