Description of key information

In a water solubility test (SPL project number: 1666/037R) the test material was determined to have a water solubility of 1.54 x 10-3 g/l (1.54 mg/l) of solution at 20.0 ± 0.5°C, using the flask method, Method A6 of Commission Directive 92/69/EEC and Method 105 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995.

The SPL study (project number: 1666/037) was chosen as the key study as it was conducted to OECD guidelines and GLP. The reliability rating for this study is 2, according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997, as the preliminary water solubility test indicated that the column elution method should have been performed as the solubility was less than 1 x 10-2g/l. However, due to the physical nature of the test material, it was not possible to use this method; experience has shown that liquid test materials coated onto glass beads cause these beads to adhere together forming a plug within the column and thus preventing water circulation.

The test material was determined to have a water solubility of 1.54 x 10-3 g/l (1.54 mg/l) of solution at 20.0 ± 0.5°C, using the flask method. The test material can be interpreted as being slightly soluble.

A supporting study is also available that was conducted 'in-house' according to the ASTM E 1148-42 method.

This study consisted of performing the shake-flask method on the "bulk" and "distilled" material. Analytical characterisation was performed by Reverse-phase HPLC using fluorescence detection.

A reliability rating of 2 was assigned to this study, according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997 as the study was conducted in house to the ASTM E 1148-02 "Standard Test Method for Measurements of Aqueous Solubilities".

The water solubility of the "bulk" material is the sum of the individual components which is 2.11 mg/L.

In order to determine the absolute water solubility of the C 12-component of TPP, an analysis of the "distilled" material was undertaken. Distillation removes a large portion of the low boiling alkyphenols and therefore removes potential interferences from the water solubility experiment. The water solubility of "Distilled" TPP is 0.031 mg/L.
