Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusions:
The substance would be a solid glass like substance in the absence of solvent. As solvent cannot, however, be removed without destabilising the molecule the substance can only ever be found as a brown viscous liquid
Executive summary:

The registered substance is produced, supplied and marketed in the presence of a liquid mineral oil solvent. Removal of this solvent will cause a change in the equilibrium of the chemical structure of the alkaryl benzene sulfonates resulting in a degradation of the chemical structure to a structure that is not representative of the substance being placed on the market in the EU. It is, in consequence, not possible to undertake any study of the registered substance in the absence of the solvent. This is further compounded by the fact that the presence of the mineral oil solvent changes the physical state of the registered substance from solid to liquid and will therefore have a considerable effect on the result of any test conducted on the substance in solvent. The presence of mineral oil solvent will affect the ability to obtain a reliable result for the substance. The material has been produced for a number of years and will only ever be placed on the market in the EU as a brown viscous liquid.

Description of key information

Benzenesulfonic acid, mono-C16-24-alkyl derivs., calcium salts (CAS 70024-69-0) the substance is produced by sulphonation of alpha-olefins, typically mineral oil with suitable substrates to produce the substance subject to registration.  As the mineral oil is a starting material and is essential to stabilise the chemical structure of the substance, it is not possible to remove the mineral oil from the substance.  The substance will not occur in nature but, in the absence of mineral oil, assessment of the chemical structure determines that the chemical species would be a glass-like solid substance.  The physical nature of the substance in mineral oil is, however, a highly viscous liquid.  The mineral oil is not, however, a constituent of the substance.
