Observations

The mass of sample weighed was 7.72 mg. The sample was placed in a Knudsen effusion cell with an aperture size of A = 279.9 µm. Then the cell was placed in the apparatus.

 

Temperature steps at 25, 30, 35°C and then 40° C were made. The step at 25°C was not taken into account.

After the experimentation, the test item remained a white powder. No degradation of the test item was observed.

 

Results

The vapour pressure of ETHYLVANILLINE (121-32-4) extrapolated at 25°C is 3.0 x 10-2 Pa.

Conclusions:
Vapour pressure of Ethylvanilline is 0.03 Pa at 25°C.
Executive summary:

The objective of the study (Defitraces, 2011) is to determine the vapour pressure of ETHYLVANILLINE (121-32-4) following the Commission Directive 92/69/EC – Commission Regulation (EC) No. 761/2009 - EC A4 method and OECD Guideline No. 104 (2006).

 

For determining the vapour pressure, eight methods are proposed in OECD Guideline No. 104 which can be applied in different vapour pressure ranges. For each method, the vapour pressure is determined at various temperatures.

 

The method used in this study is the Knudsen cell effusion method coupled to a micro-balance.

 

The quantity of substance leaving a cell per time unit through an aperture of known size is determined under vacuum conditions such that return of substance into the cell is negligible.

The mass of effused vapour is obtained by determining the loss of mass of the Knudsen cell.

 

As the logarithm of the vapour pressure of a pure substance is a linear function of the inverse of the temperature, the vapour pressure is determined in a limited temperature range.

 

In this study, the vapour pressure of Ethylvanilline is 0.03 Pa at 25°C.
