Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
benzenamines, if applicable methylated at the nitrogen and not at the benzene ring: aniline, N-methylaniline, N,N-dimethylaniline
Category description:
N-N-dimethylaniline, N-methylaniline, aniline (order of metabolic degradation)
Category rationale:
According to the OECD-Toolbox aniline is categorized under Phenols and Anilines and the other molecules defined as basesurface narcotics (OASIS Acute Toxicity MOA). A substance arrives often at that category when the target chemical does not fit in any other categories, so there may be no experimental evidence for this category. Therefore it was decided to form a specific group name for these molecules, i.e. benzenamines. The molecules selected here are further specified as methylated at the nitrogen and not at the benzene ring. They share the benzene and amine groups, and the amine group is bound to carbon at a primair, secundair or tertiair level. Further, the molecules are related at a metabolic level: N-methylaniline being an optional metabolite/degradation product of N-N-dimethylaniline and aniline being an optional metabolite/degradation product of both N-methylaniline and N-N-dimethylaniline.
