Ecotoxicological information

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Currently viewing:

Administrative data

Endpoint:
short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
1982
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: see 'Remark'
Remarks:
The reliability rating is a 2 because the study procedure was equivalent to an OECD standard guideline, which describes a procedure designed to evaluate this endpoint, and the results were reviewed for reliability and assessed as valid. The study was not conducted under GLP.

Test organisms

Test organisms (species):
Daphnia magna
Details on test organisms:
The organisms used in this study were obtained from laboratory stocks cultured at EG&G Bionomics. Culture organisms were fed a combination of Rnagen (R) Salmon Starter and unicellular green algae.

Test conditions

Hardness:
Ranged from 140 to 180 mg/L as CaCO3
Test temperature:
Ranged from 21 to 23 degrees C
pH:
Ranged from 7.7 to 8.5
Dissolved oxygen:
Ranged from 7.7 to 8.4 mg/L
Salinity:
freshwater
Nominal and measured concentrations:
Nominal concentrations were: 0.92, 1.6, 2.7, 4.5, and 7.6 mg/L
Details on test conditions:
Each test solution was prepared by adding an aliquot of test material to 1 L of dilution water and mixing on a magnetic stir plate for 4 hours. The test chambers were 150 beakers. Each treatment level was tested in triplicate. Fifteen water fleas (5 per beaker), less than or equal to 24 hours old were tested per treatment level. Observations and water quality samples were taken at time 0 and every 24 hours. Test beakers were sealed to prevent volatile loss of test substance. The test area was illuminated with Durotest fluorescent lights at an intensity of 100 to 150 footcandles. Test solutions were not aerated.
Reference substance (positive control):

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
The acute toxicity of Alcohols, C9 -11 -iso, C10 -rich, as measured by immobility to the water flea (Daphnia magna) was evaluated in freshwater. The 48-h EL50 for Daphnia magna was 6.2 mg/l, based on nominal loading of the test substance in water.
Executive summary:

The acute toxicity of Alcohols, C9 -11 -iso, C10 -rich, as measured by immobility to the water flea (Daphnia magna) was evaluated in freshwater. The 48-h EL50 for Daphnia magna was 6.2 mg/l, based on nominal loading of the test substance in water.
