A preliminary assessment using a single sample preparation as given below indicated that the sample, a clear liquid, was observed to change to a yellow colour and boil at approximately 340°C.

 

At a slower temperature gradient of 335°C to 360°C at a rate of 0.5°C/min, the sample, analysed in duplicate, gave results of 343.5°C and 343.5°C. The boiling point average is reported as 343.5°C.

Conclusions:
The boiling point of Isopentyl p-methoxycinnamate was 343.5 °C at 100.9 kPa.
Executive summary:

Experimental determination of boiling point was performed using a Buchi B545 Melting Point Instrument in accordance with EU Method A2. Although the use of the visual assessment method is not explicitly stated in the EU A2 test guideline, the method used is comparable to the principle of the method according to Siwoloboff and the photocell method. The boiling point of the test substance was determined to be 343.5 °C at atmospheric pressure (100.9 kPa).

The boiling point of the test substance was measured using a Büchi B545 melting point instrument in accordance with EU Method A2.

Prior to the determination of the boiling point of the test substance, the instrument was successfully calibrated.

Triplicate determinations of the melting point of vanillin showed results of 81.2°C, 81.2°C, and 81.2°C (mean value: 81.2°C). Triplicate determination of the melting point of caffeine showed results of 236.1°C, 235.9°C, and 236.2°C (mean value: 236.1°C).

Both values were similar to the respective literature values. Thus, calibration was deemed satisfactory for analysis being undertaken.
