Description of key information

A 72-hour study testing potassium allophonate indicates that it is not acutely toxic to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (green algae). The EC50s for growth rate and yield were greater than the highest tested concentration (100 mg/L nominal, 27.4 mg/L geometric mean) for P. subcapitata. The No Observed Effect Concentrations (NOEC) for both growth rate and yield were greater than or equal to 100 mg/L (nominal) and 27.4 mg/L (measured geometric mean).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
27.4 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
27.4 mg/L

Additional information

During the 72 -hour test with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (green algae), rapid hydrolysis of potassium allophonate led to all measured concentrations less than the minimum quantifiable limit (MQL) at 72 hours (ABC Laboratories, 2012d). All endpoints were calculated on nominal (6.3, 13, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L) and geometric mean potassium allophonate concentrations (0.890, 1.68, 5.26, 12.6, and 27.4 mg/L). At 72 hours, mean control algal cell density was 71.3 x10^4 cells/mL, while potassium allophonate concentrations ranged from 72.5x10^4 to 82.9x10^4 cells/mL. Percent inhibition of algal growth at 72 hours ranged from -2% to -16% from the control. No statistically-significant reductions in growth rate were detected at any tested concentration; therefore, both the 50% effect concentration based on growth rate (ErC50) and the NOEC were > 27.4 mg/L based on mean measured concentrations. In addition, no statistically-significant reductions in yield (biomass) were detected at any tested concentration; therefore, both the 50% effect concentration based on yield (EyC50) and the NOEC were > 27.4 mg/L based on mean measured concentrations. Due to the lack of inhibition of algal growth, potassium allophonate was shown to not be toxic to P. subcapitata in this test.
