Tetrabutane has been tested for acute toxicity to earthworms (OECD 207) and for carbon transformation activity in soil micro-organisms (OECD 217). The available data indicate that Tetrabutane is of low toxicity to soil macro- and micro-organisms and the NOEC is equal to or greater than the limit test concentration of 1000 mg soil/kg dry weight.

Additionally toxicity to plants has been tested (OECD 217) for 21 days and no test item related phytotoxic effects were observed for the tested plant species (oats, rape and soybean). No test item related effects were observed on the shoot height, the shoot fresh weight and the rate of emergence of the plant species oats and soybean at all tested concentrations. For the plant species rape, the test substance caused test item related effects of 28 % on the shoot fresh weight at the concentration 500 mg/kg DW. No test item related effects were observed on shoot height and rate of emergence at all tested concentrations. The EC50 values for shoot height, shoot fresh weight and seedlings emergence were >1000 mg/kg dw.

Furthermore, the metabolic activity of soil micro-organisms were determined (OECD 216). After incubation for 28 days, effects on the nitrogen transformation were observed and resulted in an EC50 value (28 days) of 743 mg/kg dw and a NOEC <125 mg/kg dw. However, test substance concentrations up to 2000 mg/kg dw were tested in the study, which are above the limit of solubility. Therefore, physical effects (e.g. physical oiling) in this study cannot be excluded.
