Description of key information

Short term toxicity to fish

1,1,3,3-Tetramethylbutyl peroxy neodecanoate is highly insoluble in water, and no toxicity up to the water solubility limit has been observed in previously conducted tests on daphnia and algae. Hence, to avoid vertebrate testing, a non GLP test was performed in accordance to the fish embryo acute toxicity (FET) test, OECD 236, adopted 26 July 2013. Due to the low water solubility of the parent, the embryos were exposed to a WAF as described in the RSS. A loading of 10 mg/L test material did not result in any significant differences to Danio rerio embryos. The soluble fraction of the test substances can therefore be concluded as non-toxic to zebra fish embryos at its maximum achievable solubility in the test medium in a semi static 96 hour test with daily refreshment.

Read across with the analogue CAS 22288-41-1 is performed for the acute fish endpoint. An OECD 203 study shows that the analogue is not toxic up to its water solubility limit. An OECD 236 (FET) shows the same outcome as the registered substance; A loading of 10 mg/L test material did not result in any significant differences to Danio rerio embryos.

 

Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

One OECD 202 GLP study is available. An exact EL50 determination was not possible as the substance displayed no toxicity despite a high test material loading being used at the highest concentration. No acute effects were observed. The test material and its subsequent degradation products can be concluded as not acutely toxic to Daphnia magna.

 

Long term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Two studies have been performed to assess the chronic toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. In the key study (OECD 211 GLP), no toxicity was observed at a WAF loading concentration of 10 mg/L degraded for 6 days. A non GLP test performed in accordance to OECD 211 was performed to assess the toxicity of one of the degradation products. No toxicity was observed in the highest tested concentration. Based on these findings it can be concluded that neither the parent nor its degradation products are of environmental hazard to Daphnia magna.

 

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

One study was performed to assess the toxicity of 1,1,3,3 -Tetramethylbutyl peroxy neodecanoate and its degradation products to aquatic algae. In an OECD 201 study on the parent + degradation products, using WAF loading, no toxicity was observed below the water solubility limit, the EL10 was greater than 100 mg/L loading. In all, the parent and/or its degradation products are not considered as environmental hazardous for the tested algae.

 

Toxicity to microorganisms

The EC10and EC50 of 1,1,3,3 -Tetramethylbutyl peroxy neodecanoate for activated sludge after 3 hours contact time are both > 1276 mg/L.
