Justification for classification or non-classification

Skin irritation:

Corrosivity was found, when tested undiluted 3-methyl-2-butenal over a test period of 4 hours (BASF, 1979). Rabbits were given the test substance under occlusive conditions. Edema, erythema and necrosis of the skin were seen as early as 1 hour after treatment and persisted until the end of the 8-day observation period. This test was done with BASF-internal standards.

An older BASF study (1971) resulted in corrosive effects, when given the undiluted test substance to rabbits for 20 hours under occlusive conditions. Erythema, edema and necrosis persisted until the end of the 8-day observation period. This test was done with BASF-internal standards.

Classification proposal for skin irritation according to Annex I of the EU Directive 67/548/EEC: R 34 (causes burns).

Eye irritation:

Rabbits were given the undiluted test substance into the eye (BASF, 1971). Severe eye irritation, staphyloma and persistent corneal opacity were observed. This test was done with BASF-internal standards.

No classification proposal regarding eye irritation, since R 34 (causes burns) included highly eye irritation (R 41).
