Description of key information

The 3h-EC10 of nonylphenol ethoxylate, sarcosine derivative is 57.4 mg a.i./L determined in the OECD test 209 (GLP, reliability 1). The test item is not toxic up to the concentration of 32 mg a.i./L to activated sludge of a municipal sewage treatment plant. The EC50 of the test item is 421 mg a.i./L after 3h contact time.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
421 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
57.4 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity to micro-organisms of nonylphenol ethoxylate, sarcosine derivative was determined in an activated sludge respiration inhibition test (OECD TG 209). The study was performed under GLP and was assigned reliability 1 because all validity criteria were fulfilled.

The toxicity of nonylphenol ethoxylate, sarcosine derivative was determined by measuring the inhibition of the respiration at a contact time of 3 hours. Activated sludge of the municipal treatment plant of Hildesheim, Germany was used in the test system. The test was carried out under static conditions with the substance concentrations 10 - 32 - 100 - 320 - 1000 mg a.i./L, corresponding to 10.7 - 34.2 - 106.8 - 341.9 - 1068 mg test item/L. The respiration rates of the control, reference and test item replicates were measured after a contact time of three hours, and the inhibitory effects of the test and reference item were determined in comparison to the control respiration rates. The mean inhibition of respiration for the test item replicates ranged from -8 % to 54 %.

In order to check the activity of the test system and the test conditions a reference test was carried out with copper (II) sulphate pentahydrate as reference item and the reference toxicity was determined. The EC50-value for the reference item was 114 mg/L.
