- The toxicity of the representative chemical components of the substance 'Kerosine (Fischer-Tropsch), full range, C8-16 - branched and linear'
(with linear:branched component ratios of 20:80 and 80:20) to fish have been calculated in accordance with the methods described by Peter Fisk Associates (2006) using QSARs for non-polar narcotics. The QSARs take the form of a generic equation:
log(LC50, EC50 or NOEC) = a log(Kow) + b
where a and b are constants equal to the slope and the intercept on the y axis of the regression equation and Kow is octanol-water partition
coefficient of each component under consideration.

It is concluded from reviewing test data for the substance, related substances and component substances [reported in the environmental hazard property summary review by Peter Fisk Associates (2006) - see below 'Cross-reference to other study' or Attachment 8] that 'Kerosine (Fischer-Tropsch), full range, C8-16 - branched and linear'
- will not be acutely toxic to fish at a loading rate of 100 mg/l;
- could be chronically toxic to fish at a loading rate of <1.0 mg/l.
It should be noted that the original study reports have not been reviewed.
Classification: The substance should not be classified in the EU for acute toxicity because no effects on fish (or invertebrates or algae) are predicted
at a loading rate of 100 mg/l. Some components are of high log Kow but it is likely that all are rapidly biodegradable. Classification for chronic toxicity on the basis of predicted toxicity to fish (and invertebrates) is negated by the substance being predicted to be readily biodegradable.
