Two functional groups in ZK 67985 give rise to two different hydrolysis reactions: the ketal group is cleaved at acidic to neutral pH values and the ester is hydrolyzed at alkaline pH values. The product at acidic to neutral pH values is the free ketone 3-Acetoxyandrost-3,5-diene-17-one, ZK 67986. The product can be identified by a peak at 2.5 min in the HPLC diagrams of the hydrolysis solutions at pH 4 increasing with hydrolysis time.

At alkaline pH values the free alcohol 17,17-(2,2-dimethyltrimethylenedioxy)-androst-3,5-diene is the hydrolysis product. Due to the low UV absorbance of the hydrolysis product at the detection wavelength 240 nm it could not be identified in the hydrolysis solutions.
