First-aid measures
Emergency measure - Inhalation: Move to fresh air in case of accidental inhalation of
vapours or decomposition products. Give oxygen. Call a
physician immediately.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Flush eye(s) immediately with plenty of water.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash off immediately with plenty of water.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Rinse mouth. Ingest immediately about 350ml (5ml/kg body
weight) of activated charcoal slurry. Call a physician.
Fire-fighting measures
Recommended extinguishing agent: Dry chemical extinguishers or Carbon dioxide.
Product arising from burning: Nitrogen and hydrogen cyanide.

Accidental release measures
Emergency measures in case of spillage: Use personal protective equipment. Do not breathe vapours.
Dam up. Soak up with inert absorbent material (e.g. sand,
silica gel, acid binder, universal binder, sawdust). Sweep
up and shovel into suitable containers for disposal. Do not
keep container sealed. Dispose of as special waste in
compliance with local and national regulations.
Handling and storage
Handling: Handle only in areas with appropriate exhaust ventilation.
Use protective equipment as follows:
In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable
respiratory equipment. Wear safety glasses with side-shields
and rubber gloves. Wash hands before breaks and at the end
of the working day.
Open drum carefully as contents may be under pressure. Avoid
breathing vapours emanating from containers upon opening.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Do not smoke.
Storage: Keep in a dry, cool, well ventilated place. Keep at
temperatures below 30°C. Where possible, storage under
refrigerated conditions is recommended.
Store in the original container.
Do not store together with strong oxidising agents.
Packaging of the substance and or preparation: The product will be sold in plastic pails.

Transport: The product is classified as a Self Reacting Liquid type D,
temperature controlled.
During transport, it should be maintained at temperatures
less than 30°C. Refrigerated transport is recommended.
Transport by air is prohibited.

Stability and reactivity
Danger other than fire: During storage, it is possible that that partial
decomposition can give rise to the formation of hydrogen
cyanide. Care must be taken when opening the containers not
to inhale any vapour coming out of the container.
Containers must also be opened carefully, as the contents
may be under slight pressure due to partial decomposition
with consequent formation of nitrogen.

Disposal considerations
Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: If stored correctly, unused product can be stored for longer
periods and eventually used at a later date.
No material can be recovered after processing, as the
product is either entirely degraded/consumed or trace
quantities entrapped in the polymer matrix.
Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The product should be rendered inactive before disposal.
The recommended method of disposal is by incineration of the
deactivated product in a flammable solvent.
The deactivation procedure is based on thermal decomposition
with consequent evolution of nitrogen. It is possible for
for hydrogen cyanide to be evolved during the procedure if
the mixture is acidified.
A recommended procedure for the deactivation of small
quantities of VAZO® 65L is as follows:
Add 750 ml of toluene into a two litre flask equipped with a
reflux condenser, heating mantle, addition funnel, nitrogen
inlet, thermocouple, overhead stirrer, hypochlorite
scrubber, and situated in a fume hood with a face velocity
of at least 60 FPM.
Heat the solvent to 100 C with agitation. Once the
temperature is reached, begin adding a 25% solution of VAZO®
65L (100g) in toluene. Do NOT add the liquid VAZO® 65L at
temperatures below 95°C as there is a risk of a runaway
reaction from accumulated unreacted material at these
temperatures.
Add the VAZO 65L solution slowly (5 - 10 ml per minute) and
note the gas evolution and heat generation to verify the
experimental setup.
Maintain addition at a rate sufficient to keep the
temperature below 105 C. Once all the VAZO 65L has been
consumed, approximately 11 litres of nitrogen will have been
evolved.
Continue agitation of the solution for 2 -3 hours at 100 C
after the addition of the VAZO® 65L is complete.
The resultant solution can be incinerated.
WARNING. Small amounts of hydrogen cyanide can be formed
during this procedure. The system should be under a nitrogen
purge through a hypochlorite washing system. Cyanide
generation is accompanied by darkening of the mixture.
If this happens, the solution should be neutralised with
100ml of a 10% solution of sodium hydroxide containing 1% of
a quaternary ammonium salt. (Cooling water or an ice bath
should be available in case of heat build up.)
