Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

High quality studies are available in the database of chronic toxicity to fish. A lumped data set for nickel-based compounds was considered for endpoint coverage. The lowest NOEC or EC10 value was identified as 40 µg Ni/L for freshwater fish and 3.6mg Ni/L for marine fish.

Additional information

Fresh Water ion Nickel

High quality NOEC/L(E)C10values for chronic toxicity to freshwater fish are based on the fish species, Pimephales promelasOncorhynchus mykiss, and Brachydanio rerio. The NOEC/L(E)C10 values for fish range from 40 μg/l for Brachydanio rerio (Dave & Xiu, 1991) to 15420 μg/l for the Brachydanio rerio (Kienle et al., 2009).

The following table indicates those NOEC or EC10 values that have been carried forward for the HC5-& PNEC derivation.

Fresh Water ion Fluoride

Among valid data in the literature, Shi et al. (2009) found the lowest NOEC in fish in 90 days in Acipenser baerii (sturgeon): 4 mg F-/L (measured). The contribution from fluoride ion is considered to be negligible.

CONCLUSION NOEC 40 µg/L Ni (= NOEC 66 µg/l NiF2)

Marine Water ion Nickel

Chronic toxicity values are reported for two marine fish species. EC10 values range from 3.6 mg Ni/L for growth of the topsmelt, Atherinops affinis (Hunt et al., 2002), to 20.8 mg Ni/L for growth of the sheepshead minnow, Cyprinodon variegatus (Golder et al., 2007).

Marine Water ion Fluoride

The worst-case NOEC of 113d on juvenile development was determined to be 5.5 mg/L (Mugil cephalus). The contribution from fluoride ion is considered to be negligible.

CONCLUSION NOEC 3.6 mg/L Ni (= NOEC 5.9 mg/l NiF2)
