Description of key information

Microbial degradation of DEGMEE was performed for 28 days following the “Test Guidelines for Chemical Hazard Assessment” (Public Notice No. 2013-2, issued by the National Institute of Environmental Research, Korea on January 09, 2013), section 4.1, “Biodegradation Test Method” and the “OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals” (Test Guideline No. 301, Ready Biodegradability, 301C-MODIFIED MITI TEST (1), Adopted: July 17, 1992).
The results are as follows:
The percentage microbial degradation of the reference item, sodium benzoate, observed by BOD meter was 77.5% after 7 days and 84.7% after 14 days based on the theoretical oxygen demand, thus confirming suitability of inoculum. It was within the acceptable range specified by the OECD guidelines and the National Institute of Environmental Research.
The percentage microbial degradation of DEGMEE observed by BOD meter based on the theoretical oxygen demand was a negative value at 28 days.
The percentage microbial degradation of DEGMEE analyzed by GC was a negative value at 28 days.
Therefore, the test item DEGMEE could not be concluded to be readily degradable by microorganisms in the aquatic environment based on the OECD pass level of microbial degradability (60%).
