Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

General advice: No hazards which require special first aid measures.

If inhaled: Move to fresh air. Keep patient warm and at rest. Give oxygen or artificial respiration if needed. When symptoms persist or in all cases of doubt seek medical advice.

In case of skin contact: Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Wash off immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. If a person feels unwell or symptoms of skin irritation appear, consult a physician. Wash contaminated clothing before re-use.

In case of eye contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Keep eye wide open while rinsing. Immediate medical attention is required.

Treatment: Treat symptomatically.

If swallowed : Do NOT induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

If you feel unwell, seek medical advice (show the label where possible).

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media : Use extinguishing measures that are appropriate to local circumstances and the surrounding environment. Water spray, Foam,Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Specific hazards during firefighting: The product is not flammable. Dust may form explosive mixture in air. Take measures to prevent the build up of electrostatic charge.

Burning produces noxious and toxic fumes.

Special protective equipment for firefighters: In the event of fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

Further information : Standard procedure for chemical fires.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: Avoid breathing dust. Avoid dust formation. Avoid contact with the skin and the eyes.

Wear protective gloves/ protective clothing. Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Wash contaminated clothing before re-use.

Environmental precautions: No special environmental precautions required.

Methods for cleaning up: Pick up and arrange disposal without creating dust. Sweep up and shovel. Keep in suitable, closed containers for disposal. After cleaning, flush away traces with water.

Handling and storage

This substance is a transported isolated intermediate used under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 18(4).

DTBA is manufactured outside the EU then imported for consumption as an intermediate at one site only. DTBA is supplied to the user in sealed bags. The unopened bag is transferred to a closed loading booth fitted with extraction and explosive release systems. The bag is opened using gloves attached through holes in the booth to prevent worker exposure. The DTBA is transferred directly from the loading booth to the reactor via a rotary valve and enclosed pipe work. In the reactor, DTBA is fully reacted.

Advice on safe handling: Avoid creating dust. Do not breathe vapours/dust. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in the application area.

Advice on protection against fire and explosion: Avoid dust formation. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Take precautionary measures against static discharge.

Requirements for storage areas and containers: Store in original container.Keep tightly closed.

Other data : Keep in a dry place.

No decomposition if stored and applied as directed.

Exposure controls / personal protection

This substance is a transported isolated intermediate used under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 18(4).

DTBA is manufactured outside the EU then imported for consumption as an intermediate at one site only. An air extraction system is fitted to the loading booth which passes through two 5 micron filters. A differential pressure gauge fitted across the filters indicates if they are blinded/blocked. At the end of the bag charging process, the filters are back pulsed with air to remove residual DTBA on the filters. This is blown back into the loading booth and subsequently is charged to the reactor. The waste DTBA packaging is disposed of via an enclosed chute at the back of the loading booth. The empty bags are compacted into large bags, which are then removed sealed and disposed of offsite as chemical waste.

Engineering measures: Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at machinery and at places where dust can be generated.

Personal protective equipment

Respiratory protection : In the case of dust or aerosol formation use respirator with an approved filter. Half mask with a particle filter P2 (EN 143).

Hand protection : Impervious gloves. Nitrile rubber. The selected protective gloves have to satisfy the specifications of EU Directive 89/686/EEC and the standard EN 374 derived from it. The choice of an appropriate glove does not only depend on its material but also on other quality features and is different from one producer to the other. The break through time depends amongst other things on the material, the thickness and the type of glove and therefore has to be measured for each case. Gloves must be inspected prior to use. Replace when worn. Do not wear leather gloves.

Eye protection : Wear protective gloves/ protective clothing/ eye protection/face protection. Safety glasses with side-shields

Skin and body protection : Choose body protection in relation to its type, to the concentration and amount of dangerous substances, and to the specific work-place. Lightweight protective clothing disposable one-piece overall with integral hood

Hygiene measures : Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. High standards of skin care and personal hygiene should be exercised at all times. Keep working clothes separately. Wash hands before breaks and immediately after handling the product. Contaminated work clothing should not be allowed out of the workplace. Remove and wash contaminated clothing and gloves, including the inside, before re-use. When using do not eat, drink or smoke.

General advice : No special environmental precautions required.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity: None known.

Chemical stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions.

Hazardous reactions: No hazards to be specially mentioned.

Conditions to avoid: None known.

Materials to avoid : Bases, Oxidizing agents

Thermal decomposition : ca.284 °C

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Product :This material and its container must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Dispose of as hazardous waste in compliance with local and national regulations. According to the European Waste Catalogue, Waste Codes are not product specific, but application specific. The product should not be allowed to enter drains, water courses or the soil.

Contaminated packaging : Dispose of as unused product. Do not re-use empty containers.
