Description of key information
No studies on toxicity are available on the reaction mass of CaF2, CaSO4 and CaCO3. Instead information on the 3 constituents is available.
No studies on birds are available for CaSO4 and CaCO3 but no hazards are expected.
No studies are available for calcium fluoride but various studies of low reliability are summarised in the WHO (2002) review : Various studies are summarised in the WHO (2002) review. In feeding studies with different bird species, thicker egg shells, depressed weight gain and increased mortality rate was observed.
For Sturnus vulgaris, intubated with fluoride doses up to 160 mg F-/kg bw for 16 days, a NOEC of 10 mg F-/kg bw was derived for mortality and LD50 was calculated to be 17 mg F-/kg bw. Using the molecular weight of CaF2, this translated to a NOEC of 20.5 mg CaF2/kg bw for mortality and 34.9 mg/kg bw CaF2 for LD50.
On the basis of the available NOEC for CaF2, the NOEC value for the reaction mass can be concluded: NOEC of 41 mg CaF2/kg bw for mortality and 69.8 mg/kg bw CaF2 for LD50. This value is calculated by taking into account that the reaction mass contains only 50% of CaF2 (ca. 47.5 w/w % CaF2) and that the additional of Ca2+ through CaSO4 and CaCO3 would even further reduce the toxicity of CaF2 as free F- will be complexed.
