For the classification of division 4.2 the test item was tested according to division 4.2 (self-heating substances) according to the UN test N.4, described in the “Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria”, 5threvised edition 2009. Due to the negative result in a wire netting cube of 10 cm edge length at 140 °C the test item has not to be classified as “self-heating substance” according division 4.2 of the regulation cited above. 2.5 g of the test item were placed into the wire-basket.
The temperature of the test item followed behind the oven temperature starting at an oven temperature of approx. 30 °C. At an oven temperature of approx. 180 °C, an exothermal effect was observed, reaching a temperature of 406 °C. A second exothermal effect started at an oven temperature of approx. 300 °C reaching a temperature of 611 °C while the oven temperature maintained below a maximum of 438 °C. After the test, the fill level of the basket was approx. 20 % of the level at the start of the test.
As the exothermic process started below 220 °C further testing is necessary.
Individual results
UN test N.4 for self-heating substances
Test 10 cm cube, 140 °C
351.4 g of the test item were filled in the sample container. Heating up the oven the test item temperature followed the oven temperature until, at about 52 °C, the test item temperature showed a slower increase. This effect was attributed to the evaporation of volatile contents such as e.g. water. Above 75 °C the test item temperature increased quickly. The test item reached the oven temperature of 140°C after approximately 6 hours and surpassed the oven temperature thereafter due to an exothermal effect. The test item reached a maximum temperature of 142 °C after 8 h of the start of the experiment. The test item temperature decreased slowly and reached the oven temperature of 140 °C asymptotically after 38 h experimental time. After the measurement, the mesh wire basket contained approximately 2 wt.-% less test item than at the start. After the test, the test item was checked visually. The colour of the test item remained unchanged. The maximum temperature of the test item was 142 °C.
The temperature of the test item did not exceeded 200 °C. Due to this result, no further tests were necessary.
Description of key information
The purpose of this study was the determination of the relative self-ignition temperature of the test item according to: Guideline VDI 2263, sheet 1 (Grewer-oven); UN test N.4, described in the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, fifth revised edition, 2009, Appendix 6.
The sample was tested as received. No further preliminary treatment such as drying or milling was performed. The results given in this report only apply to the tested sample. Furthermore the results apply only to the classes investigated. Therefore it cannot be excluded by this report that any other classifications have to be applied to the sample. The classification was done according to the criteria of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (Manual of Test and Criteria, 5th revised edition).
