Additional information
The Pigment additive FNC (CAS 73455-75-1) is composed of Copper phthalocyanine monosulfonic acid (CAS 28901-96-4) and dodecylamine (CAS 124-22-1).
The toxicity of the test substance to aquatic invertebrates was examined in a GLP-compliant study according to OECD guideline 202. In this study, Daphnia magna (4 replicates of 5 animals per concentration) were exposed to nominal concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 1 and 2 mg/L and a blank control for 48 hours. No concentration control analyses were carried out because the tested concentrations were below the detection limit. Furthermore, the test item is reported to be stable in water over a period for at least 96 h. At the start of the test and after 24 and 48 hours each test vessel was visually checked for immobilised daphnids. After 48 hours no effects on mobilisation were noted up to a concentration of 0.5 mg/L. At test concentrations of 1 and 2 mg/L, 100% immobility was noted after 48 hours exposure. No additional adverse effects or abnormal behaviour are reported in any of the test treatments. Based on these findings, the 48 -h EC50 value is determined at 0.569 mg/L (nominal; BASF AG 2003).
In case of the pigment compound Copper phthalocyanine monosulfonic acid (CAS 28901-96-4) the assessment is based on toxicity data on Daphnia magna., as well as on read-across data for the structural analogous substance copper phthalocyanine (CAS 147-14-8).
Daphnids (Daphnia magna) were exposed in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 202 for 48 hours. The effect of CAS 59160-79-1 on the swimming behavior was investigated; 48-h EC50 value of > 100 mg/l (nominal) were determined (ibacon, 2015). Supporting this, the structural analogue CAS 147-14-8 was investigated in several studies regarding toxicity in aquatic invertebrates. One study comparable to OECD TG 202 revealed an EC50 > 500 mg/L (BASF AG 1989). BASF AG (2001) showed EC 50 > 100 mg/L in a screening study according EED Directive 93/32/EWG. Finally, a screening test according to EEC Directive 93/32/EEC confirmed these findings with an EC50 > 100 mg/L (nominal; BASF AG 2004).
In summary, Copper phthalocyanine (CAS 147-14-8) is concluded to be with high probability not harmful to aquatic invertebrates.
The toxicity of dodecylamine (CAS 124-22-1) to aquatic invertebrates was assessed in a study according to OECD TG 202 under static conditions.Daphnia magnawas used as test species. The test concentrations were analytically verified. A 48 -h EC50 was determined to be 0.026 mg/L (meas.; VKI, ATV 1998). Supporting, a study by Finlay and Callow (1997) on the toxicity of CAS 124-22-1 onArtemia salinasas test species revealed an LC50 of 0.239 mg/L (24h exposure; static conditions).
It can be concluded that dodecylamine is acutely very toxic to aquatic invertebrates.
