Executive summary:

A short-term acute toxicity test, in accordance with the prevailing OECD testing guidelines (OECD 201) and GLP, is available for this substance.

Based on measured concentrations , the 72h EC50 (growth rate) was calculated to be 22 µg/L test item, while the 72h EC50 (biomass) was calculated to be 9 µg/L. The NOEC (growth rate) was calculated to be 3.2 µg/L.

Therefore the test item (Diuron) was determined to be acutely toxic to Scenedesmus subspicatus.

Executive summary:

A short-term, acute toxicity test is available for this substance. Conducted in accordance with the prevailing OECD testing guidelines (OECD 201) and GLP, modified for use with the cyanophyta, Anabaena flos-aquae, as the test organism in this case.

Based on measured concentrations , the 72h EC50 (growth rate) was calculated to be 30.9 µg/L test item, while the 72h EC50 (biomass) was calculated to be 232 µ.g/L. The NOEC (growth rate) was calculated to be 10 µg/L.

Therefore the test item (Diuron) was proved to be acutely toxic to Anabaena flos-aquae.

Description of key information

Diuron is toxic to aquatic algae

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Three toxicity tests with aquatic algae and cyanobacteria, all according to OECD guidelines (OECD 201 and 221) and GLP, are available for Diuron. A key study using the green alga, Scenedesmus subspicatus, calculated an (72 h) EC50 (growth) of 22 µg/L with a NOEC value of 3.2 µg/L (Heimbach, 1991). Since this is a standard species for acute toxicity testing in algae then these values are used as evidence of Diuron causing acute toxicity to aquatic plant species. Two supporting studies also determined EC50 and NOEC values of similar concentrations. The (72 h) EC50 ( growth) and NOEC values for Anabaena flos-aquae (cyanophyta) were 30.9 µg/L and 10 µg/L respectively (Memmert, 1998).
