Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

If swallowed:

Do not induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Loosen tight clothing such as a collar, tie, belt or waistband. Get immediate medical attention.

Eye Contact:

Check for and remove any contact lenses. In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Cold water may be used. In case of persistant irritation, get medical attention.

Skin Contact:

In case of contact, immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Cold water may be used. Get immediate medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse.

Inhalation:

If inhaled, remove to fresh air as soon as possible. Loosen tight clothing such as a collar, tie, belt or waistband. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If the victim is not breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and seek immediate medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Small Fire: Use dry chemical powder.

Large Fire: Use water spray, fog or foam. Do not use water jet.

Special Remarks on Fire Hazards: When heated to decomposition methylene-bis-acrylamide acrylamide emits acrid smoke and fumes.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:

Personal precautions:

Avoid breathing dust. Remove all sources of ignition. Avoid dust formation in confined areas.

Protective equipment:

Wear adequate personal protective equipment (see Exposure Controls/Personal Protection).

Emergency procedures:

Keep people away from spill/leak. Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so.

Environmental precautions:

Do not allow contact with soil, surface or ground water.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:

Non-sparking tools should be used.

Small spills:

Do not flush with water. Sweep up or vacuum up spillage and collect in suitable container for disposal.

Large spills:

Do not flush with water. Sweep up and shovel into suitable containers for disposal.

Residues:

Try to prevent the material from entering drains or watercourses.

Handling and storage

Precautions:

Keep locked up and away from heat and sources of ignition. Ground all equipment containing material. Do not ingest. Do not breathe dust. Wear suitable protective clothing. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. If ingested, seek medical advice immediately and show the container or the label. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Keep away from incompatible material such as oxidizing agents, acids, alkalis.

Storage:

Protect from strong sunlight. Keep container tightly closed. Keep container in a cool, well-ventilated area. Do not store above 50°C (122°F).

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering Controls:

Use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to keep airborne levels below recommended exposure limits. If user operations generate dust, fume or mist, use ventilation to keep exposure to airborne contaminants below the exposure limit.

Personal Protection:

Splash goggles. Lab coat. Dust respirator. Be sure to use an approved/certified respirator or equivalent.

Gloves.

Personal Protection in Case of a Large Spill:

Splash goggles. Full suit. Dust respirator. Boots. Gloves. A self-contained breathing apparatus should be used to avoid inhalation of the substance. Suggested protective clothing might not be sufficient; consult a specialist

BEFORE handling this product:

Consult the Safety Data Sheet.

Stability and reactivity

Stability: The substance is stable.

Instability Temperature: Stable up to 174°C (polymerisation point).

Conditions of Instability: Excess heat, incompatible materials.

Incompatibility with various substances: Reactive with oxidizing agents, acids, alkalis.

Corrosivity: Not corrosive.

Special Remarks on Reactivity: The substance is stable at room temperature. Reacts spontaneously with hydroxyl-, amino-, and sulfhydryl- containing compounds. Reacts vigorously with acids, bases producing ammonia and acrylic acid.

Spontaneous polymerization does not readily occur. May polymerize upon contact with oxidizing materials such as peroxides.

Disposal considerations

Employees engaged in the disposal of N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide should be thoroughly trained in effective procedures and protected against skin and eye contact and inhalation of dusts, fumes and vapours.

Waste N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide and containers that have held N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide can be a hazard. Do not dispose of such waste material in non-approved landfills. Containers must be rinsed thoroughly and then can be disposed by burning in an approved industrial incinerator or buried in an approved landfill.
